But Bagigalupi strikes the right mix of both character driven plot and world-building in twenty-five pages or less. Pump Six & Other Stories by Paolo Bagigalupi - Speculative short fiction is hard to get right so much time can be spent on building the world that it becomes a slag, or it becomes so much about plot that it feels rushed or unfinished. Doughty is an exceptional writer in that she is able to condense the enormous philosophical and social concept of death into something bite-sized and practical. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes and Other Lessons from the Crematory by Caitlin Doughty - I was moved by this book.
